Tool Sheds & Teamwork
The best career opportunities are in the mechanical trades.
This year has been one of my most productive ever. My pickup is racking up mileage as I drive from one region to another. And I see new construction everywhere.
During a previous trek, Ric Haury, president of Suncrest Gardens, learned that I’d be driving through Ohio, en route to Indianapolis, he asked if I would invest time with his supervisors and managers. Ric heard me speak about service management at a conference a few years ago. “This is perfect timing for management and operational improvement,” said Ric. “It’s prior to our busy summer season.”
Then Ric asked me a question. “Do you mind training in our tool shed?”, asked Ric.
“It’ll be my pleasure,” I answered.
I brought my own projector for the PowerPoint slides and Ric’s team set up the tool shed with tables and chairs. It was a cozy and productive environment.
The best companies want to be even better!
Tool shed synergy is outstanding. The thirty supervisors and managers were taught how to prioritize critical projects in the midst of busy, day-to-day activities using objective criteria.
Numerous flipchart activities enabled the Suncrest Gardens team to share ideas and improve operational efficiency. We also covered how to enhance internal communication among various teams when juggling multiple tasks. The operational efficiency solutions flowed from this excellent team of responsible supervisors and managers. Impressive teamwork.
Teamwork, within every company, can improve exponentially when the company owner possesses vision and the willingness to develop the company’s management potential.

Insight from Steve and his willingness to share experience by ASKING QUESTIONS relative to the discussion points is a valuable tool. In order to learn, Steve teaches us how to properly think through to the end once a decision is made. His ability to “size ’em up” and then give guidance is uncanny.
I relish our infrequent chances to meet, and always pick his brain. We are fortunate to have Steve Coscia as a friend and yes, a mentor.
Thank you Steve for all you do!
Thanks Joe for the kind words – the feeling is mutual. My best to Elizabeth.
