A Father’s Love Nurtures
The above photo says it all.
Few childhood memories exceed the sense of being held in a father’s protective arms.
My first memories of my dad were of him driving an oil truck.
Naturally, my mom was a dominant presence since she stayed home and cared for the children (I was the sixth and two more would come after me).
Dad was nurturing and fun. His eager smile, loving nature and big muscles are cherished memories.
In the presence of a loving father, children feel safe and protected. And the bond that develops between father and son is one of life’s most special relationships.
Many a Saturday as a boy was spent accompanying my dad on one of his smaller concrete projects such as driveways, patios and walkways. We would rise early to load a large concrete mixing bin on top of his 1959 Ford Ranch Wagon and drive to the local construction depot.
A variety of contractors converged at the construction depot early in the morning to order supplies for the day’s work.
I can remember being in awe of these men. They had character: rough beards, muscular and all seemingly smoking Camel cigarettes. Their dress code was similar: green construction trousers, tee shirt and heavy work boots. Their tough exterior was in stark contrast to their gentle and considerate demeanor. This taught me much about mutual respect and the principle of the Golden Rule.
In the presence of a loving father, children feel safe and protected.
How about you? What do you remember about your dad?
The below “Father’s Day” video is brief synopsis about the special bond between fathers and children.
My dad taught me about toughness, resilience and tenacity. Not with words. But rather with his example.
If your dad’s still alive then give him a hug. If your dad has passed on, pause and reflect upon the special moments. A father’s love nurtures those who are kept in his care.
